The best way to solve missing teeth

In the past dentures were the only option for coping with complete loss of dentition, but the disadvantages of wearing dentures are considerable…

If you are a denture wearer you’re probably familiar with the problems that come with wearing ill-fitting or out dated dentures. Problems such as slipping, chafing and discomfort can all result from old dentures, and you may even find that you have problems chewing or speaking.

Additionally, traditional dentures are often bulky, making it difficult to taste your food, and they can be prone to slippage, leaving you at constant risk of embarrassment. However, thanks to treatment options such as implants, including the excellent All-on-4 system, you can finally say goodbye to dentures forever.

Dentures: pros and cons

A dental bridge is made by fixing crowns on teeth either side of the gap and fixing a false tooth in the space. They are permanently fixed in place, and can look very good, allowing food to be eaten normally. A dental bridge can be used if you have a few missing teeth or teeth missing on one side of your mouth.

A disadvantage of a bridge is that you need strong teeth either side of the gap. Another disadvantage is that you’ll lose healthy tooth structure. This is because the teeth either side of the gap need to be ground down and shaped to create room for the crowns.

Tooth bridge: pros and cons

Partial dentures or full dentures are the most cost effective way of replacing lost teeth. They will help you to eat properly and will give a reasonably good cosmetic effect, although the clips used to anchor the denture may show when you smile. Dentures might be a solution if your missing teeth are at the back of your mouth.

While many people find dentures comfortable to wear, others struggle. Dentures can rub, feel bulky and can move. Dentures moving in your mouth can become an increasing problem after a number of years, as the bony ridge supporting the dentures gradually changes shape and becomes flatter.

Dental implants: pros and cons

Dental implants place an artificial root into the jawbone and a false tooth is securely fixed to the root. Dental implants help preserve the bone in your jaw, so the bony ridge that used to support your teeth will not flatten nor lose height. Dental implants don’t require healthy teeth to be modified in any way, and will help ensure they are kept in their correct position. Dental implants are versatile, as they can be used to replace one tooth or to restore an entire mouth.

There can be a perception that dental implants are expensive. In reality, they may be more affordable than you think, call us on 01474 537191, or Book online
