Apr 23, 2014 | Treatments

Here at Parrock Dental, we are always aiming to do whatever we can to achieve the perfect smile for all of our patients. It is possible to make small improvements which will make a huge difference to the appearance of your smile. One small change that you can make is to change any amalgam (silver fillings) to white ones.

Why do we have amalgam fillings?

Under the NHS amalgam is the most common type of filling as it is very hard wearing and is a very pliable material so is good at filling in any small crevices in the tooth. Amalgam is a combination of metals that has been used for fillings for over a hundred years in dentistry and is still used today as it is very effective and is most commonly used under the NHS.

However, with the focus on teeth in the media over the last few years, cosmetic dentistry has been brought to the forefront and your smile is more important than ever. Many people feel conscious of their amalgam fillings, as they can show when you open your mouth to speak or laugh, and if there are more that one or two, they can look unsightly. So many people are opting to have their amalgam fillings changed to white fillings.

Composite (white fillings ) are tooth coloured and are made from powdered glass, quartz, silica or other ceramic particles added to a resin base. Your dentist will choose a shade to match your own teeth. After the tooth is prepared, the filling is bonded onto the area with an adhesive and a light shone onto it to set it With this type of filling, the dentist may have to remove less of the tooth, which is obviously better.

White fillings are classed as a ‘cosmetic’ treatment, you can only have them done privately. Costs can vary and usually depend on the size and type of white filling used, and the time it takes to carry out the treatment.

Here at Parrock Street Dentist we pride our selves on using the best possible materials for white fillings. So don’t hesitate to change your amalgam fillings for new polished white ones and make a difference to your smile today!!!
