Who is a Suitable Candidate for Dental Implant in Kent?

Perhaps you’ve recently lost a tooth, or maybe you had your teeth extracted a while ago and are interested in exploring new ways of replacing them. Dental implants are considered by many to be the best possible way of replacing missing teeth, and the good news is that most people will be suitable candidates for implant surgery. The basic requirements for successful dental implant in Kent include the following:

  • Having healthy gums, and any remaining teeth should also be in good condition and free from disease
  • Implants need a minimum amount of bone to anchor them into the jaw, although if you don’t have sufficient bone you may be able to have a bone graft
  • A commitment towards taking care of your implants, as it’s important to brush them thoroughly twice a day, and to floss once a day

People who may be unsuitable candidates for dental implants include young adults whose jaws may not have finished growing, as dental implants are not recommended for anyone below the age of 18. They also not a good idea for pregnant women, as it is best to wait until the baby is born. People who smoke are more likely to experience implant failure than non-smokers as the nicotine impedes healing. Implants may also be unsuitable for people who have previously received high-dose radiation for the head or neck, and for those who have chronic diseases. These include diseases that affect the immune system such ashaemophilia, connective tissue diseases, and diabetes. If you do have one of these conditions then it’s still worth asking Dr Rik Trivedi about having implants as you still may be suitable; it all depends on the severity of your condition and how well it is controlled.

If you currently grind or clench your teeth then it’s important to get this condition sorted out before you have dental implants, as this habit can create too much stress and pressure on the implants and will increase the risk of failure.

Your Kent dentist will also want to know any medications you may be taking, as certain drugs such as steroids can affect the immune system and may influence healing. You will need to have a full assessment at Parrock Dental and Implant Centre to see whether or not you are suitable for implant surgery. If not then the dental team will be able to suggest alternative ways of replacing your teeth.
