Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you have one or more missing teeth, you might be a suitable candidate for dental implants. A dental implant consists of a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone to anchor one or more artificial teeth. Dental implants can be used to restore the function and cosmetic appeal of your smile, allowing you to chew food properly and improve your speaking ability.

To have dental implants fitted it usually involves a small operation carried out using a local anaesthetic. The implant is placed into the jawbone and left to heal for a number of months. If you have multiple missing teeth, you can have a denture or bridge fitted using dental implants.

The advantage of using dental implants to fit bridges or dentures is that they are sturdy and permanently fixed into the jawbone. Most bridges on teeth will last 5-7 years before being replaced. Teeth on dental implants have been shown to last over 10 years plus as there is no risks of infection and decay problems. If you have no teeth, it’s possible to have a full upper and lower arch restoration using bridges fixed to dental implants or a full upper and lower arch restoration using overdentures fixed to dental implants.

If you would like dental implants but have been told you don’t have enough jawbone for the procedure, it’s possible to have a bone graft. When it’s been determined there is enough jaw bone, the implants can then be fitted.
